The Swedish School of Boston was founded in 1976 to give the Swedish children living away from Sweden, a chance to keep the Swedish language alive and get to know the Swedish culture and traditions. The education is centered on developing the kids’ knowledge about the language in order for them to comprehend and express themselves writing and speaking Swedish. It is also important to increase their vocabulary. It is also weighted heavily to strengthen the students’ Swedish identity by encouraging them to become familiar and comfortable with Swedish culture, for example, songs, traditions, literature, geography, and history.

The school meets once a week, Tuesdays 4.30-6.30. We meet west of Boston in The First Parish Church in Weston, 349 Boston Post road, Weston, Massachusetts. Parents as well as other interested people belong to the Parents Association, which is the head organization for the Swedish School. A tuition is paid per term and child. Some of the school’s costs are covered by support from the Swedish School system in Stockholm and the Finnish National Board of Education. To participate in the Swedish School, at least one parent in the family has to be a Swedish (or Finnish) citizen, and Swedish must be an active language in the home. With help from a placement test we decide in which group the children should be placed. Of course, age makes a difference in this decision-making as well. We have six different educational groups and our students are between the ages 3 and 13 years old. We can therefore, for the most part, accommodate everyone’s wishes as for the educational level of their child. For more information about the different groups, please click the links on the left side of this page.

The number of students enrolled in the Swedish School varies every year. The last two years we’ve had an enormous increase in the number of students, and we’re hoping for a continued development in the right direction. As of right now, fall of 2007, we have about 45 students enrolled!

As for the activities during the school year, there are Christmas arts & crafts, Sankta Lucia, a Christmas party, a skiing or ice skating trip, an Easter party, a weekend-trip in May to the Swedish ski club’s house in Bondville Vermont, as well as a Midsummer party.

Every fall and spring, the Swedish School has an open house, when interested families and teachers can visit during the lesson hours to learn more about the education and other school activities. They can sit and observe the lessons, participate in the preschool groups, or talk to teachers and other parents as well as students.
