There are 12 students in the Nytänkare-group this year, hard at work improving their oral and written Swedish. We aim to gain fluency in our reading, increase our vocabulary and start writing short texts.
We also learn about Swedish geography, animals and nature. We incorporate games and art to make learning more fun.
The students usually get a little homework and are encouraged to read together with their Swedish speaking parents, au pairs or other adults.

Helena teaches in the Nytänkare-group. Born and raised in Turku, she has lived in the US since the mid-1990s. Helena has been active at the Swedish School since 2004 when her daughter started attending. On the school board since 2004, she has been vice-president, chairman for three years, and currently handles communications. Before becoming teacher, Helena used to sub whenever needed, including a whole semester on the preschool side. As a university student Helena worked as a teaching assistant in a refugee class and has been fascinated by language acquisition ever since. When not busy with Swedish School, Helena handles recruitment and process development for a translation company.
