The Smultron group is made up of our youngest students. Many of the kids have older siblings that are in the other groups in the school. The kids play, sing, talk, and fool around. In the beginning of the lesson the kids, with Anna-Karin’s help, count how many are present. Then they get a chance to talk about something they’ve done in the past week. We work according to the same Silorema themes as Hallonen and Blåbären. We talk about the theme picture and review new words, do activities and sing songs about the theme. Sometimes the books we read also have to do with the theme.

We sing a lot in the Smultron group. The kids pick songs by picking balloons off a board. On the back side of the balloon is a song. During the fall we’ve sung several songs, including Bä bä vita lamm, Imse Vimse Spindel, I ett hus vid skogens slut, Blinka Lilla Stjärna etc. We sing, play, and do arts & crafts along with the Blåbär- and Hallon groups. The point of the Smultron group is to, through games and songs, develop the kids’ vocabulary and give them a chance to talk in Swedish to children their age.

And THIS is Anna-Karin:

Anna-Karin Backman is the newest teacher at Swedish School, and she teaches the Smultron group. She grew up in Örebro and lived in Stockholm for five years. In 2003 Anna-Karin came to Marblehead as an Au-Pair. She now has a BA in teaching and psychology, and presently works as a teacher's aide in 6th grade.

Anna-Karin enjoys working with children of all ages. In her spare time she likes to dance Lindy Hop, sewing, reading and hanging out with her friends and family.
