This year
there are five Vikings and one chief in the Viking group. We usually
start our lesson by talking about things we have done during the last
week. There’s always someone who has a funny story to tell. It is
important that everyone gets to speak and use their own Swedish
language. After this, there is reading practice, both alone and out
loud, writing, Social Studies and game. Except for this, the chief, Kati, also has a supply of reading
comprehension activities, crosswords puzzles, writing practices, and
word games. We have a
good steady library at Swedish School so all students are encouraged to
have a Swedish book with them at home. Now and then we do book reports
in the Viking group.

Kati will
assign real writing assignments a couple of times per term as well. Then
it’s time to prepare your writing fingers, turn on that imagination, and
produce a well-written essay. Although it actually doesn’t become
well-written until we’ve edited it a couple of times. In December, we
usually get to present what we’ve been working on at Swea’s Yule tide
festival!
Before
Christmas and Midsummer, we practice different Swedish songs, and then
we perform at the Midsummer party and we also receive certificates for
completing the school year. Swedish School is awesome!!!
And THIS is Kati:
Kati is
the chief in the Viking group at Swedish School. She is from Göteborg
and moved to Boston in August 1998 with her family, husband Leif and two
kids, Malin and Kalle. Kati is an educated 4-9 teacher in Social Studies
and Language Arts (Swedish). Before she moved to Boston she worked as a
Social Studies and Language Arts teacher for grades 7-9 at Göteborgs
Högre Samskola for six years. Kati has several other jobs except for
Swedish School. During the winter, she works as a substitute teacher and during spring and fall she also works part-time at
a golf-club. She also refs volleyball in a local recreational league. She spends most of her free time with her family and
playing golf. Kati has been with Swedish School since March 2004 and
except for being in charge of the Vikings, she also takes care of the
library and the website. Kati enjoys working with the kids in Swedish
School. “It gives me a connection to the education in Sweden, and a
chance to help the kids remember their language and learn a little bit
about their country, Sweden.”
